Great Zimbabwe , extensive stone ruins of an African Iron Age city. It lies in southeastern Zimbabwe , about 19 miles 30 km southeast of Masvingo formerly Fort Victoria. The central area of ruins extends about acres 80 hectares , making Great Zimbabwe the largest of more than major stone ruins scattered across the countries of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is estimated that the central ruins and surrounding valley supported a Shona population of 10, to 20, With an economy based on cattle husbandry, crop cultivation, and the trade of gold on the coast of the Indian Ocean , Great Zimbabwe was the heart of a thriving trading empire from the 11th to the 15th centuries.
The first two are characterized by mortarless stone construction, but they also include ruined daga earthen and mud-brick structures that may once have rivaled the stone buildings in grandeur. The Valley Ruins, located between the Hill Complex and the Great Enclosure, include a large number of mounds that are remnants of daga buildings. The Hill Complex, which was formerly called the Acropolis, is believed to have been the spiritual and religious centre of the city.
It sits on a steep-sided hill that rises feet 80 metres above the ground, and its ruins extend some feet metres by feet 45 metres.

By creating conditions akin to the center of the Earth inside a laboratory chamber, researchers have improved the estimate of the age of our planet’s solid inner core, putting it at 1 billion to 1. The results place the core at the younger end of an age spectrum that usually runs from about 1. What’s more, the experiments and accompanying theories help pin down the magnitude of how the core conducts heat, and the energy sources that power the planet’s geodynamo — the mechanism that sustains the Earth’s magnetic field, which keeps compasses pointing north and helps protect life from harmful cosmic rays.
The Earth’s core is made mostly of iron, with the inner core being solid and the outer core being liquid. The effectiveness of the iron in transferring heat through conduction — known as thermal conductivity — is key to determining a number of other attributes about the core, including when the inner core formed. Over the years, estimates for core age and conductivity have gone from very old and relatively low, to very young and relatively high.
But these younger estimates have also created a paradox, where the core would have had to reach unrealistically high temperatures to maintain the geodynamo for billions of years before the formation of the inner core. The new research solves that paradox by finding a solution that keeps the temperature of the core within realistic parameters. Finding that solution depended on directly measuring the conductivity of iron under corelike conditions — where pressure is greater than 1 million atmospheres and temperatures can rival those found on the surface of the sun.
The researchers achieved these conditions by squeezing laser-heated samples of iron between two diamond anvils. It wasn’t an easy feat. It took two years to get suitable results. At first the geodynamo was maintained by thermal convection alone. Now, each mechanism plays about an equally important role.

Looking at antique furniture, we often seek clues for authenticity and age. There are many factors that show true historic construction, but one clue that is often overlooked is the type of nail used to hold the piece together. Nails in antique furniture are often barely noticeable, but they are another key to unlock the history of wooden pieces. The quest for the ideal nail has taken centuries of development.

The story of steel begins long before bridges, I-beams, and skyscrapers. It begins in the stars. Billions of years before humans walked the Earth—before the Earth even existed—blazing stars fused atoms into iron and carbon. Over countless cosmic explosions and rebirths, these materials found their way into asteroids and other planetary bodies, which slammed into one another as the cosmic pot stirred.
Eventually, some of that rock and metal formed the Earth, where it would shape the destiny of one particular species of walking ape. On a day lost to history, some fortuitous humans found a glistening meteorite, mostly iron and nickel, that had barreled through the atmosphere and crashed into the ground. Thus began an obsession that gripped the species.
Over the millennia, our ancestors would work the material, discovering better ways to draw iron from the Earth itself and eventually to smelt it into steel. King Tut had a dagger made of iron—a treasured object in the ancient world worthy of few more than a pharaoh. Iron that comes from meteorites has a higher nickel content than iron dug up from the ground and smelted by humans.
To our ancestors, this exotic alloy must have seemed like it was sent by entities beyond our understanding. The ancient Egyptians called it biz-n-pt. In Sumer, it was known as an-bar. But there was an extremely limited supply, brought to Earth only by the occasional extraterrestrial delivery, making this metal of the gods more valuable than gems or gold.

Care and Cleaning of Iron – Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) Notes 9/6
The cast iron trend has been heating up for well over a decade. Food used to be for sustenance. There seem to be a million more cooking shows than there were years ago. Many celebrity chefs prefer cooking with cast iron, and even endorse certain brands, so it makes sense people have jumped on the bandwagon, looking for cast iron at estate sales , in flea markets, and online.
People are also getting savvier about what they put into their bodies and making healthier decisions.
In a study published in in the Journal of Archeological Science, researchers examined ancient Egyptian iron beads that date to around.
It is generally agreed that the key and lock were invented in ancient Egypt and China simultaneously, in around BC. These ancient keys and locks were usually made from either wood or iron. Keys and locks really took hold during the Roman Empire, however, as geographical conquest brought great riches, which then needed to be protected against theft.
Compared to other collectibles, antique keys are fairly easy to get hold of and can often be found in charity and thrift stores, and at car-boot and garage sales, as well as in antique shops, auctions, and on-line. Antique keys are easily identifiable with reference to shape, colour, evidence of tarnishing, and weight. They may be unmarked, or have unique markings not seen today, such as symbols and hallmarks.
Typically, the older and more finely embellished a key is, the rarer it will be, and therefore the more valuable. Keys dating back to pre, for example, are a lot more in demand than keys dating back to the early twentieth century – and there are far fewer of them. Replica antique keys will very rarely feel as heavy as genuine antique keys as they are usually made of aluminium.
The aged patina on the surface of the key may also appear too even in colour and tone. Age, condition, detailing, rarity, weight, shape and size are all key considerations. This section of the Historical Locks website covers over industry and vernacular terms and definitions in the narrow field of locks and keys. Locking mechanisms often involve complex technology that we rarely consider in everyday life. But suppose you want to talk about the details of a lock? What are all these locks and their parts called? Sometimes you have to choose from several designations — which one is right, what does the word mean and where does it come from?
These ancient keys and locks were usually made from either wood or iron. Keys dating back to pre, for example, are a lot more in demand than keys.
